APPEAL FROM SAPS MOUNTED UNIT Can you help?
The SAPS Mounted Unit is looking for temporary stabling for 15 horses who will be on duty at the SADC Conference at Gallagher Estate. Ordinarily these horses would have to be transported every day from various facilities around Gauteng, through rush hour traffic, for the duration of the Conference.
If anyone is able to offer temporary stable facilities from 11th – 19th August for 15 horses, please contact Captain Optof urgently on 082 778 5930. The SAPS horses are inoculated. Feed and grooms will be provided by the SAPS.
HORSE PATROLS Don’t forget that the Horse Patrols will be meeting again this weekend. If you were unable to attend the launch last weekend, please feel free to join the patrol on Saturday. Click on the following link to see the article on the front page of the City of Johannesburg’s website: http://www.joburg.org.za/content/view/2768/266/
For the time being, the meeting place will remain at the corner of Crocus & Maple Roads. Alternate meeting places will be discussed with regular attendees. If it is too far for you to ride to the current meeting place, please feel free to bring your horse box. There is plenty of parking available and obviously great security!

THANK YOU FROM GEKCO To all those residents and organizations who took part in the tour for Bokomoso/Retail Africa on Wednesday 23rd July, we say a HUGE thank you! We could not have done it without your passion and help. In particular we would like to thank Noele Hillen of Beaulieu Prep, pupils at Beaulieu Prep (who staged a very effective silent protest during the introductory proceedings), Councillor Annette Deppe, Karen Keller, North Rand Animal Clinic, the Lipizzaners and their riders, Theresa Barnard and all the carriage drivers, Cluny Farm and Paul Fairall. We also thank all the riders who were out on the streets and those residents who put up protest posters at their properties. The developers noticed it all! So did the media. Make sure you get hold of a copy of the Midrand Reporter. Beaulieu Prep scholars made front page!
The day’s proceedings went very well and we feel sure that the developers left with a vastly improved understanding of the importance of the equine industry and how a shopping centre in our midst would not only negatively impact the industry, but threaten our lifestyle and livelihoods. A full report, with photos, will be made in the next Kyalami Country News.

Press Release 23 July 2008
CPF in Greater
Kyalami launches Street & Horse Patrols with SAPS Mounted
Unit Like many suburbs, the Midrand Sector 2 Community Policing Forum (CPF) of Greater Kyalami has been running successful street patrols, in conjunction with Captain Chetty (Sector Commander) and Inspector Sewcharan (Sector Manager) of Midrand SAPS, to curb the serious levels of crime. But, being a thriving equine area, it was recently decided to launch Horse Patrols, in an effort to involve a broader spectrum of the community. Greater Kyalami is a registered conservancy area known as GEKCO and is home to the highest concentration of horses in Southern Africa, and a thriving equine industry. It seemed only natural then, that local riders could easily function as patrollers for the CPF while on outrides. Captain Optoff of the SAPS Mounted Unit readily agreed to participate in the CPF patrols in the area. Invitations were sent to the community and the Horse Patrols were officially launched on Sunday 20 July 2008. Present on the day were 14 members of the SAPS Mounted Units from Pretoria, East Rand and Johannesburg and some 30 riding members of the community. Riders were supported by four vehicles and 12 officers of Midrand SAPS under command of Captain Chetty, and 22 members (plus 22 vehicles) of the local CPF Street Patrollers, under command of CPF chairman, Wayne Woodward. It was quite a sight to behold – a field full of eager mounts being tacked up by riders donned in reflective jackets. Horse boxes prominently displayed the SAPS logo and street patrollers lined their cars up on the side of the road, lights flashing brighter than Santa’s own Xmas tree! The prominent corner guaranteed a fair degree of rubber-necking from passing traffic. Captain Optoff provided a short history of the SAPS Mounted Unit, followed by a briefing for local riders who would be joining the Horse Patrol. By this time, horses were pawing the ground, anxious to get going. The group was split into two ‘units’ and assigned to two teams of mounted officers, one under Captain Optoff and one under Seargeant Schoombee. After hurried sips of coffee, they were finally off... En-route, local riders, some of whom compete at the very highest levels of competition, shared information and skills on horsemanship with SAPS officers, while they in turn educated residents on crime prevention and police matters. A short while later, Midrand SAPS officers and local Street Patrollers followed in cars but it quickly became apparent just how beneficial the Horse Patrols would be. Before long, riders were trotting through long grass, across open fields and vacant land, scouring areas normally inaccessible to cars. Both riders and drivers provided spectacular police visibility, picking up casual riders along the way. Just after midday, and a good few hours in the saddle, the Horse Patrol drew to a close. Riders dismounted and more information (and more than a few jokes) was swapped as thirsty horses drank or were rubbed down in preparation for the homeward journey. Local horse vet, Karen Bohme, also spoke at length to Captain Optoff about equine health matters and provided invaluable advice to the mounted unit. Everyone agreed it was a very rewarding and successful day. Valuable information was swapped and all parties gained enormously from the day’s activities. Ongoing operations will be planned on a weekly or bi-weekly basis and CPF Chairman Wayne Woodward hopes that within a short space of time, participation from local riders will increase dramatically, while crime levels decrease. The next Horse Patrol days have been set for Saturday 26th July 2008, Saturday 2nd August 2008, Saturday 9th August 2008. Facts: Greater Kyalami consists of the suburbs of Kyalami AH, Kyalami Ext 1, Glenferness, Kleve, Treesbank, Saddlebrook, Sun Valley, portions of Blue Hills AH, Blue Hills Estate, Beaulieu Estate, portions of Carlswald AH, portions Crowthorne AH The size of Greater Kyalami is approximately 45km2 , and consist predominantly of large tracts of agricultural land and upmarket rural residential homes Greater Kyalami is one of the largest equine industries in Southern Africa and one of the last remaining open spaces able to support such an industry, within the northern borders of Johannesburg. At least 40% of residents own horses It is estimated that almost 1 400 non-residents stable horses in the area There are more than 5 500 horses in the area More than 4 000 people are directly employed in the equine industry The value of horses in the area is in excess of R363 million The equine industry in Greater Kyalami spends more than R155 million annually in running costs, excluding wages and salaries The Capital Investment in the area is in the region of R780 million

The Kyalami area is under tremendous threat from developers.
The Greater Kyalami Conservancy (GEKCO) has engaged with various departments in the City of Joburg with regards to this development pressure.
The Conservancy is showing the area to the developers of the proposed 20 hectare shopping mall on Kyalami Ridge (opposite Beaulieu Prep) on Wednesday 23rd July.
Our motivation for the tour is to show them what the community in Kyalami is all about and therefore why we don’t want or need their shopping centre. Besides all the environmental, road and security issues the bottom line is we are an equestrian area. The type of development they want to do will kill our industry and open up more development opportunities. Therefore the purpose of the visit is
You are urged to voice your objection to this type of development in our area through this petition. Please sign the objection and support our initiative. The details required on the petition are necessary because we will also submit this petition to the Speakers Office as well as a submission to the Mayoral Committee about the monetary value of the Equestrian Industry in this area.
The schools in the area will be doing the same.
We need a
strong unit voice!

MISSING CHILD To all the residents who responded to this morning’s call for help to locate Jamie, we once again thank you for your quick response and caring approach. As a community, you are awesome!
To all the parents out there, we encourage you to visit the following website that has lots of useful information and advice. You never know when you might need the information or the assistance: www.missingchildren.co.za
COMMUNITY POLICING FORUM (CPF) – MOUNTED HORSE PATROLS Don’t forget that our CPF and the SAPS are launching the mounted patrols this weekend. We encourage all the riders in our suburbs who want to become involved to step forward. You will need your own horse (suitably tempered to ride in a group) and a willing pair of eyes. Mares in season and stallions are not advisable, but may be able to participate with clearance from the CPF or Mounted Unit.
This is a safe way for you to do your community service while on an outride with the SAPS Mounted Unit. The opportunity for creating awareness around crime prevention as well as for educating motorists about our horsey areas and roads, is enormous.
We are hoping to be joined by a number of media members, so bring out all your beauties and let’s show the rest of the country how it’s done!

Save Greater Kyalami and The Horse Industry Dear Greater Kyalami community, THE GREATER KYALAMI HORSE CENSUS The time has come to stand up and be counted as part of the Greater Kyalami Horse Census. We have been given a unique opportunity to present a case for saving the rural lifestyle, open spaces and horse industry in the suburbs of Greater Kyalami. With the help of our Councilors, John Mendelsohn (ward 94) and Annette Deppe (ward 93) we will collate all data to show the true worth of the Horse industry, both to its supporters and to this City, strongly motivating that the City of Johannesburg protect our country suburbs and officially recognises the Horse industry, once and for all. Anyone who either lives in one of the suburbs of Greater Kyalami, or is in anyway connected to the Horse industry in Greater Kyalami, should participate. You do not have to own horses to participate. Go to www.kyalamicountry.co.za to fill in the Horse Census questionnaire online NOW. This is the most preferred route as all data captured will link directly through to a specially designed database and save us many hours deciphering hand writing to capture manual submissions. There are clear instructions and more information on the website. However, there are community members who may not have access to internet and will need to complete a hard copy of the questionnaire. Hard copies will be available on request from your Resident's Association and may either be delivered back to them or deposited in the special boxes located at: THS Offices, Dahlia Road, Kyalami Inanda Country Base, Rose Road, Sun Valley (More venues may be added in the New Year, if required.) If you know of a friend or neighbour who is not on our database, or does not have access to the internet, please provide them with the web address above or ask them to contact us to get a hard copy of the questionnaire. It is vital that we attempt to get every single household, business and organisation to participate. As such, a record of each submission will be marked off against the property roll for Greater Kyalami to ensure that we reach everyone. If in any doubt about any aspect of the questionnaire, please contact us or email you request/concern to info@kyalamicountry.co.za The cut-off date for questionnaire submissions is Friday 15th February 2008. We thank you in advance for working together as a community and for your participation in the Horse Census. Kind Regards The Greater Kyalami Resident's Council (GKRC) |
