The above favourable comments received from both consumers and providers alike, endorse the work of the newly established grading scheme for equine establishments.
The Grading Council wishes to extend its compliments to the trail blazers who are showing confidence in a concept which has as its goal to benefit horses and riders alike.
The first grading assessors’ training was held last month with theoretical and practical sessions and to this end, we thank Maple Ridge Equestrian Farm, for permitting the practical to be conducted at their premises. EQUI-GRADE assessors are selected for their knowledge of horse care, their professionalism, objectivity, communication skills and maturity.
The process for grading of establishments is structured in such a way that subjectivity is not a consideration. The Grading council agreed on a set of internationally accepted minimum standards that need to be met in terms of horse and rider care. These criteria are assessed strictly on invitation by the respective establishment and a series of scores are awarded according to the minima being met, in conjunction with additional facilities that may enhance that establishment’s overall services on offer.
The assessor passes on the results of these scores to the Council who then determine the award. The name of the establishment is kept confidential during the Council sitting in order to maintain impartiality in considering the award. The award is the star-in-horseshoe symbol and is presented in Bronze, Silver or Gold. The Council comprises of people drawn from various sectors in the industry, with representatives from welfare, racing, education, riding schools, livery yards, breeding, etc. All of the members are passionate about the welfare of horses, and the safety of riders and handlers.
